Inspiring Talk for Schools, Colleges, and Universities

Many students. enter the classroom, carrying more than just books in their backpack. They carry the weight of adverse childhood experiences—poverty, abuse, neglect, or some other trauma. They struggle with emotional regulation, impulse control, and academic performance. These struggles make it hard to focus, trust, and believe in their own potential.

Darren Harris is a Paralympian, who has succeeded because of, not despite his disability. Having been diagnosed with a rare eye cancer aged one, Darren knows what it means to deal with an adverse childhood experience. With a master’s degree in health psychology, he is also the perfect person to give students the tools to build resilience so they don’t give up when things get tough.

His Unblind Your Mind programme includes a talk that gives students a powerful framework for coping with ACEs:

  • Practice Self-Care – Students cannot pour into a full cup.
  • Regulate Emotions – Get students in the right state to learn.
  • Inspires students to develop a growth mindset.
  • Shows students how to use techniques like self-talk and visualisation.
  • Give students breathing techniques.
  • Develop a support system.
  • Seeking Help: Normalise asking teachers, peers, or family for support when struggling.
  • Accountability Partners: Encourage study groups or revision partners to stay motivated and reduce isolation.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Promote hobbies, sports, or creative activities as a way to de-stress.

If you are ready to join the dozens of academy trusts and schools that have trusted Darren Harris to deliver a inspiring talk to a specific year group or whole school, during a themed day, week or month,

Without intervention, these students are at risk of exclusion, or falling further behind.
With a plan of action, students become energised, inspired, and empowered; and students learn how to speak up, be heard, and communicate with confidence, skills they’ll need for life.
